CM, leaders pay respect to Muthuramalinga Thevar

MADURAI, OCT. 30. The Chief Minister, Mr. O. Paneerselvam, garlanded the statue of Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar at Goripalayam junction here today.

At a simple function, the Chief Minister, accompanied by his cabinet colleagues, MLAs, MPs and party cadres, garlanded the life-size statue of Thevar. The Assembly Speaker, Mr. K. Kalimuthu, presided.

Those who paid respects included Messrs. Thalavai Sundaram, Anwar Raja, Nainar Nagendran, C. Dorairaj and Ms. Valarmathi Jebaraj. MPs Malaichamy and T.T.V.Dinakaran also accompanied the Chief Minister, who after the function, left for Pasumpon memorial in Ramanathapuram district by road.

Leaders from various political parties also garlanded the statue. The Union Minister of State for Youth Welfare and Sports, Mr. Pon. Radhakrishnan, and State BJP leader, Mr. L. Ganesan, the Tamil Maanila Congress leader, Mr. Ram Babu, Madurai MP Mr.P.Mohan (CPI-M), Madurai Mayor Mr.S.Ramachandran (DMK) and Janata Dal's State general secretary, Mr. K. John Moses, also paid respects to the leader. Mr.Kandasamy, All India Forward Bloc (United), and others also garlanded the statue.

Three processions taken out by different factions of Forward Bloc, also passed off peacefully in the city. Most of the shops and business establishments, particularly in Simmakkal and Goripalayam, in the city remained closed. Police had made elaborate security arrangements in the city.

Garlanding the statue of Muthuramalinaga Thevar, placing of wreaths at his memorial, performing of laksharchana, singing of devotional songs and songs on Thevar, annadhanam, padayatra from various places to Pasumpon village and tonsuring of heads by the followers of Thevar marked the celebration of 39 th guru pooja and 93rd birth anniversary of Muthuramalinga Thevar.

Mr. Paneerselvam placed a wreath at the memorial. He also visited the house of Thevar, situated within the premises of his memorial.

Meanwhile, Mr. Biswas, MP and the general secretary of All India Forward Bloc, Mr. Naren Dev, Co-opt Minister, West Bengal, Mr. Pon Radhakrishan, Union Minister of State for Sports and Youth Affairs, Mr. L. Ganesan and Mr. H. Raja of BJP, Mr. Vaiko, general secretary of MDMK, Mr. Austin of MGR ADMK, Mr.G.M.Sreedar Vandayar, president of Moovendar Munettra Kazagam and Dr.Sethuraman of All India Moovendar Munetta Kazagam, also paid homage at the memorial.

Jayalalithaa pays homage

CHENNAI, OCT. 30. The AIADMK general secretary, Ms. Jayalalithaa, and leaders of various political parties today paid homage to Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar by garlanding the Thevar statue in Nandanam.

Ms. Jayalalithaa, along with members of the State cabinet, garlanded the statue in the morning. The Union Minister, Mr. T.R. Baalu, the TMC president, Mr. G.K. Vasan, the MGR-ADMK general secretary, Mr. S. Thirunavukkarasu, the Chennai Mayor, Mr. M.K. Stalin, and representatives of Dalit organisations such as the Ambedkar Jananayaka Peravai also paid homage to Muthuramalinga Thevar.
