Accord eludes AIADMK, allies
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI, OCT. 30. The AIADMK today could not reach an
understanding with its allies on election of chairpersons of
district panchayat councils and panchayat unions and deputy
mayors and vice-chairmen of various local bodies.
Despite three rounds of negotiations with the TMC, an agreement
remained elusive. However, on election-eve, TMC leaders were
still hopeful of an agreement.
The TMC had sought deputy mayorship of the Madurai Corporation,
but the AIADMK was willing to offer only deputy mayorship of the
Coimbatore Corporation where the AIADMK and allies together might
not be able to win.
The AIADMK has also expressed its inability to part with any
district panchayat council chairman post. There were also
difficulties in agreeing on the specific panchayat union chairman
posts sought by the TMC.
The CPI is asking for the Tiruvarur district panchayat council
chairmanship. Some progress has been made in talks. Party leaders
were hopeful of an agreement by tomorrow morning. However, there
was not much forward movement in the negotiations for
chairmanship of 12 panchayat unions wanted by the CPI.
