Premji, Dravid, Suma among winners

BANGALORE, OCT. 30. The State Government on Tuesday announced the
winners of Rajyotsava Award. The awardees include four freedom
fighters.
Prominent among the 55 awardees are Mr. Azim Premji, Chairman and
Managing Director of Wipro group of companies, Mr. B. V.
Vaikuntharaju, journalist, Ms. Pushpa Girimaji (consumer
movement), Ms. Vijayalakshmi Bidari, who stood first in the IAS
examination, Mr. G. V. Channabasappa, Mr. Basheer (drama), Mr. B.
K. S. Varma (fine arts), Mr. S. G. Biradara, and Mr. Fakir Mahmad
Katpadi (literature), Ms. Suma Sudheendra (veena), Ms. Pratibha
Prahlad, and Ms. Bhanumati (dance), Ms. Jayamala (film), and Mr.
Rahul Dravid, and Ms. Honnappa for sports.
Announcing the names of winners at a press conference here, the
Minister of State for Kannada and Culture, Ms. Rani Satish, said
three organisations, including one from the U.S., had been given
the award. She said there were 14 women constituting 25 per cent
of the awardees. A record number of 2,000 people had applied for
the award.
The Director, Kannada and Culture, Mr. K. C. Rama Murthy, said
the department collected bio-data from more than 70 per cent of
the awardees. The Chief Minister, Mr. S. M. Krishna, would
felicitate them here on November 1 with a gold medal, a citation
and a shawl.
The following is the list of awardees: Mr. Antappa Father and Mr.
B. Jayasimha for serving Kannada, Ms. Dechu Moola (tennis), Ms.
Ranjini Ramanujam (Badminton-handicapped), Mr. B. S. Ranga
(film), Ms. Ningamma Yachenahalli (Sobanehaadu), Mr. M. R.
Basappa (Veeragase), Basave Gowda (Bhagavantike-Pataakunita), Mr.
L. R. Hegde (folklore). Mr. B. S. Mani, Chairman, Sanjevani,
Kannada eveninger, and Editor, Dina Sudar, and Mr. K. S.
Sachidananda Murthy, Resident Editor, The Week, New Delhi, who is
a native of Kolar district.
Mr. Aruva Koragappa Shetty, Mr. Neelavara Lakshminarayana Rao,
and Mr. Belli Kereetada Venkatadas (Yakshagana), Ms. K.Nagaratna,
Mr. Basavalingiah, and Ms. Lalita Rachappa Patrota (drama), Mr.
Bandappa Ganeshpure, Mr. C. P. Nagowda, and Mr. Veera Brahmachar
for fine arts/sculpture. Mr. B. R. Inamdar and Mr. K.G.Das
(medical), Mr. H. H. Annayya Gowda, and Mr. Parappa (education),
Mr. Muthuraj (hair- dresser), who conducts mass hair-cutting on
important national holidays, Mr. N. T. Jitoori and Ms. Ratnamma
Heggaditi (social service), Mr. H. G. Sanna Guddiah and Mr.
Sudhakar (literature), Mr. Lal Mahmad Bande Nawaz (Tatvapada).
Ms. Kamala Rajiv Purandare and Mr. Mahantaswamy Mundaragimatha
(Hindustani music), Mr. K. Manjappa (nadaswara), and Ms.
Sitalakshmi Venkateshan (Carnatic music).
Among the freedom fighters are Mr. Ramachandra Hammanna Nayaka
(Uttara Kannada), Mr. Ramaswamy Reddy (Kolar), Mr. K. M. Rudrappa
(Hassan), and Mr. B. S. Shivappa Shettar (Mysore).
Mr. Diwakar (literature and journalism), and Mr. P. Vishwambhara
Nath (literature and Kannada) are given awards under Horanada
Kannadigaru category. Three organisations - America Kannada
Kootagala Aagara of the U.S., Devadasi Vimochana Sangha of
Athani, and Sri Ramaseva Mandali of Bangalore - have been given
the award.
Mr. C. S. Kedar, Secretary, Department of Kannada and Culture,
was present.
