More optic fibre cable lines for State

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, OCT. 30. The Southern Telecom Region of the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited would be adding 7,000 km. more of optic fibre cable lines in the State in the next one year to the existing 24,000 km. for providing greater bandwidth and transmission capacity.

This was stated by Mr. M.A.S. Reddy, General Manager (Maintenance), Southern Telecom Region, at a press conference here on Tuesday. Andhra Pradesh tops the optic fibre cable network in the country with close to 10 per cent of the total bandwidth of 2.4 lakh km. "There is enough bandwidth available here", he said.

The BSNL had suffered a property loss of Rs. 2 crore during the recent cyclone in the districts of Nellore, Anantapur and Cuddapah. However, communication services suffered no disruption at most of the places as the BSNL was equipped with wide and extensive digital network, he said.

With the help of the Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) technology introduced in the transmission network, the long distance telecom traffic was carried smoothly. "There has been a breakdown in rail and road communication but because of the ring technology there was no problem with the telecom traffic," he said. This SDH technology would soon extended to the mandals too as system failures can be avoided.

Wherever there was disruption in the optic fibre cable it was immediately attended to and `semi-permanent' services had been restored at all the affected places. The leased circuits too have been serviced so that there were no interruptions for the ATMs, railway reservation circuits, airline reservation circuits data circuits and cellular mobile services, he added.
