NDA rule
Sir, - Mr. Harkishan Singh Surjeet's article `Two years of NDA
rule' (Oct. 29) is an outpouring of anti-Americanism and anti-
privatisation ideology his party has espoused all these years. He
begins his diatribe with the claim that the Marxists had warned
the country when the BJP-led NDA coalition was taking shape. But
was there an alternative to the NDA then?
We cannot ignore globalisation and isolate ourselves by indulging
in protectionism to safeguard our industries and products. If our
products match international standards and if the prices are
competitive, there will be a market for them. I wish Mr. Surjeet
would look to his ideological masters in China, who churn out
world class products at a low price.
We have had many Central and State Governments which were steeped
in corruption and nepotism. How can Mr. Surjeet point an accusing
finger at the NDA when the CPI(M) is in alliance with a corrupt
AIADMK in Tamil Nadu?
K. Muralidharan,
Palakkad, Kerala
Sir, - Mr. Surjeet has forgotten that it was Mr. Vajpayee who
started bus services between Delhi and Lahore and between
Calcutta and Dhaka. It was under the BJP regime that we conducted
a nuclear test in Pokhran which strengthened our security
position.
There is no doubt that there are some loopholes here and there
but how can the Government be criticised as a whole? The steps
taken for development should also have been mentioned.
Ekta Singh,
New Delhi
