Jayalalithaa challenges summons
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI, OCT. 29. The former Chief Minister, Ms. Jayalalithaa,
has moved the Madras High Court to quash the summons issued
against her by the Principal Sessions Judge, Mr. S. Ashok Kumar,
in connection with the `London Hotels case'.
The summons, dated October 4, was served at her residence by a
court officer on October 11, after the police had expressed their
inability to serve summonses on two earlier occasions.
Describing the sessions court proceedings as ``invalid and
without jurisdiction'', Ms. Jayalalithaa said a recipient of
summons was entitled to question the same if sufficient legal
grounds were available to challenge the very cognisance of the
offence.
The summons requires Ms. Jayalalithaa to appear before Mr. Ashok
Kumar on November 4 to receive copies of chargesheets.
