Many contesting as 'rebel' candidates

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, OCT. 24. Many ``disgruntled aspirants'' from various political parties are contesting in elections to the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) Council as ``rebel'' candidates.

As many as six followers of Mr. V.Somanna, Binnypet MLA, who had joined the Congress two years ago, are said to be contesting as independent candidates on ``bus'' symbol.

Over 150 BJP candidates, including Mr. B.V.Ganesh and Mr. M. Nagaraj, corporators from Chamarajpet and Ganganagar, respectively, have revolted against the party leaders for not considering their names.

Mr. Ganesh and Mr. Nagaraj are fielding their wives in their respective wards as they could not contest from there because of the new reservation pattern.

``The party leaders included the wives of three sitting corporators, Mr. P.N.Sadashiva, Mr. S.Raghu and Mr. Huchaiah, in the final list of candidates, while ignoring our pleas,'' they said.

However, Mr. Gangabhyraiah, former leader of the Opposition in the BMP, who embraced Buddhism to enable himself to contest from the ward he is representing now, withdrew his nomination papers.

The Janata Dal(S) is also facing similar problems. Mr. V.Nagaraj, known as ``Book Nagaraj'', is contesting as a ``rebel'' candidate from Sevashram. Ms. Lakshmi from Ramachandrapuram, Mr. Kadrigal from Bashyamnagar, and Ms. N.Lakshmi from Gandhinagar are contesting as ``rebel'' JD(S) candidates.
