President nod for Ordinance to counter terrorism
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, OCT. 24. The President, Mr. K.R.Narayanan, today gave
his assent to the Ordinance to counter terrorism, which is
considered to be tougher than the lapsed TADA.
The approval came after a detailed scrutiny by the President, as
strong reservations had been expressed by opposition parties as
well as human rights groups.
The Cabinet had decided to promulgate the Ordinance a few days
ago and immediately afterwards, Opposition parties had assailed
the move.
While providing for safeguards against terrorism, the Ordinance
spells out new offences under which non-disclosure of information
regarding terrorists would be an offence.
The Ordinance casts a duty on persons knowingly in possession of
information relating to offences under it to inform the
authorities and makes failure to do so a punishable offence.
