The Kashmir imbroglio
Sir, - Day in and day out we never tire of invoking the Shimla
Agreement, which specifically mentions Kashmir as an issue to be
resolved bilaterally by Pakistan and India. The results of the
initiatives taken by the Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Behari
Vajpayee, for making Lahore and Agra summits possible, are there
for all to see.
It will be wishful thinking to imagine that Pakistan would shelve
the issue of Kashmir. Likewise, it is hard to imagine India will
ever give up Kashmir. The only way to peace and prosperity in the
subcontinent is by first acknowledging that there is an issue to
be resolved and make a sincere effort towards solving it.
