Police fires at Thirukattupalli mob

THANJAVUR, OCT. 22. Six persons were injured when the police
opened fire at Thirukattupalli, 25 km from here, to quell a mob
which turned violent following alleged delay in announcing the
local bodies election results last night. They are stated to be
out of danger.
Five police personnel including Mr. Arjunan, DSP, and a fire
service personnel were injured in stone throwing. According to
the police, a large number of villagers who gathered in front of
the Sivasamy Aiyer Higher Secondary School, where votes for the
Budalur panchayat union were counted, tried to enter into the
centre damaging a barricade put up by the police at about 8 p.m.
When the police pushed them back, the villagers threw stones. The
police then chased the crowd to the bazaar but as violence did
not stop, they opened fire.
Arogyadas (17) of Paliyapatti, Balasubramaniyan (32) of
Ayodhyapatti, Murugaiyan (60) and Chithiravelu (32) of
Thurusupatti, Akasam (38) of Ayodhyapatti and Nagaraj (42) of
Sengipatti received bullet injuries.
Official sources here said Mr. Kanakaraj, Revenue Divisional
Officer would conduct an enquiry into the violent incidents and
the firing.
