Cong. seeks judicial probe

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, OCT. 19. The Congress today demanded a judicial inquiry by a sitting judge of the Allahabad High Court into the incidents at the disputed site in Ayodhya. It also rejected the inquiry ordered by the U.P. Government which is to be headed by the Additional DGP. ``It is nothing but an eye-wash,'' said the party spokesperson, Mr. Jaipal Reddy.

The Congress questioned the legitimacy of the U.P. inquiry on the ground that the offence related to ``blatant violation'' of the Supreme Court order and that the Additional DGP was not the competent authority to probe it. ``This whole inquiry is meant to ease the pressure by submitting a doctored report,'' he said.

The party also criticised the Prime Minister's statement describing the gate-crashing into the prohibited area at the disputed site as a mere security lapse. ``He is trying to make it appear as an innocuous security lapse. All this is a part of an attempt to whitewash the whole affair,'' Mr. Reddy said.

The party said the BJP Government ``colluded with the people responsible for it''.
