Honouring the Nobel

Sir, - This refers to your Editorial `A Nobel for Mr. Naipaul' (Oct. 13). It is heartening to learn that Mr. V.S. Naipaul has been awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. He is a great writer and is highly admired for the quality of his prose. He was one of the first winners of the Booker Prize in 1971, the Nobel Prize was long overdue to him. I fully agree with those who feel that he, as a writer, honours the Nobel rather than the other way round. Mr. Naipaul is a much better and greater writer than many of those who have been awarded the prize earlier.

Now that Mr. Naipaul has scaled the ultimate peak, his writing would touch an even higher plane.

Onkar Chopra,

New Delhi
