Compulsory helmet for two-wheeler riders likely
By Our Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD, OCT. 17. Compulsory wearing of helmets for two-wheeler
drivers could soon become a reality if the State Government
approves a proposal made by the city traffic police.
"As per the Motor Vehicle Act wearing helmets is a must for both
the driver and the pillion rider and we have asked the Government
to remove the order of making it optional," the DCP (Traffic) Mr.
M. V. Dinakar Prasad, said here on Wednesday.
Interacting with some collegians and residents of colonies under
the North Zone at the Children's Traffic Park, near the
Sanjeevaiah Park, as part of the countdown to the Police
Commemoration Day, the DCP said the two-wheeler riders were not
only victims of a majority of accidents but they also were a
cause and most of the injuries suffered were to the head.
Mr. Prasad said the traffic police intended to earmark the
extreme left part of main roads for the exclusive use of RTC
buses. Road widening has created some space and once the MCH
completes carpeting of the widened roads, the rule would be
enforced for better traffic regulation, he said.
The high volume of traffic, violation and pollution on the roads
was making traffic regulation a herculean task, he said, and felt
the solution was to improve the public transport system. He
appealed to the general public not to offer bribes to traffic
policemen and to inform him in case money was demanded by them.
However, it was imperative that vehicle drivers carry their
original driving licenses and RC books all the time. There was
also a need to streamline the license issuing system, he said.
