Punjab wants Centre to review laws on sacrilege
CHANDIGARH, OCT. 11. The Punjab Cabinet today urged the Centre to
review the laws pertaining to acts of sacrilege so as to ensure
``the most severe penalty'' to those indulging in such acts. In a
resolution expressing ``deep anguish'' over the alleged acts of
sacrilege in the State, the Cabinet requested the Centre to make
suitable amendments in the statute to ``ensure the most severe
penalty to those guilty of such crimes.'' Meanwhile, Shiromani
Gurdwara Prabhandak committee (SGPC) president, Mr. Jagdev Singh
Talwandi, constituted a three- member committee, including two
High Court judges belonging to the community, to go into all
aspects relating to the controversy.
Earlier in the day, the panthic Morcha, comprising anti-Badal
Akali factions, demanded a judicial probe into the alleged acts
of sacrilege, a demand which was rejected by the Chief Minister
Parkash Singh Badal, who said the inquiry being conducted by dig
Suresh Arora ``will expose the real culprits behind the acts
within 10 days.''
