Fused with energy and fun

WITH THEIR happy, infectious smiles, 42 children took the audience on a nostalgia trip. They were called the Young Mellows, part of Mellow Circle, and were at their talented best as they entertained a select gathering with old melodies, at the Museum Theatre, this past week.

Mellow Circle, an organisation devoted to charity, was formed a year ago with the coming together of young, like-minded people. The Young Mellows comprises children in the age group of five to 16. Most of them just enjoy singing, as was evident at the show, titled "Top of the Pops".

The kids sang such classics as "Maria" and "Raindrops on roses" (Sound of Music), "Bare Necessities" (Jungle Book), "A whole new world" (Aladdin), "If I were A Rich Man" (Fiddler on the Roof), "Somewhere O'er the Rainbow" (The Wizard of Oz) and a medley of pop tracks, in perfect harmony. It is commendable indeed, as the children are not formally trained in music and were not even auditioned for the show..

To add some variety, there was some foot-tapping too, literally. For the number from "Lion King", the kids, all dressed up in furry costumes, pranced around on stage, enjoying themselves thoroughly. A medley of pop tracks — "We will rock you", "Rome wasn't built in a day", "A hard day's night" to name a few — brought down the curtains on an evening that was fused with energy and joie de vivre. The credit for putting up the well-coordinated show goes to Becky Thomas, a music teacher.

The Mellow circle is planning to stage a play next month, titled "The Fourth Man".
