'Spare the people from U.S.-Afgan conflict'

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, OCT. 11. The RSP Central committee has urged the Vajpayee Government not to drag the common people of the country into the U.S.-Afghan conflict.

A resolution adopted by the RSP Central committee, released for publication here today, said the BJP Government's offer of support to the war effort of the U.S. and its allies has exposed India to the ominous designs of imperialist forces.

The Government should ensure that people of the country do not get entangled in the conflict or are subjected to any misery following the war designs of the U.S.

Another resolution termed the heavy loss of lives in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon on September 11 as `most unfortunate' but felt that the retaliatory strikes mounted by the U.S. were the result of emotion rather than solid evidence to implicate the Afghan Government or its people in the attacks. Terrorist and fundamentalist forces of any hue are a potential threat to human society. But such menace cannot be combated by forces which overtly or covertly assist fundamentalism and terrorism as and when it suits their purpose.

The Taliban and persons such as Osama bin Laden are grave threats to any civil society.

However, the U.S. Government, which has earned notoriety by patronising and encouraging terrorism mainly to subvert progressive social movements across the globe, has no right to claim the leadership role in the fight against terrorism.

The Government of India had offered support to the U.S. war effort without being even asked for such assistance.

Although this action of the BJP Government has satisfied majority fundamentalist outfits, it would only help strengthen other forms of fundamentalist arguments, the resolution added.
