Armed forces fully prepared
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, OCT. 8. The armed forces are fully vigilant and have
drawn up contingency plans following U.S.-led air strikes against
the Taliban in Afghan cities, senior officers of the armed forces
said today.
Their readiness to counter any eventuality was conveyed to the
Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee, when he visited the
office of the Director-General of Military Operations (DGMO) in
the Defence Ministry for an hour on Sunday evening to acquaint
himself with the ground preparations and deployment of U.S.-led
forces in the region.
Further corroboration came from the Air Chief Marshal A.Y. Tipnis
who said that contingency plans had been prepared to deal with
any situation after the U.S.-led forces attacked Afghanistan but
he declined to elaborate. Terming the challenges facing India due
to the air strikes on Afghanistan as more political than
military, the Air Chief, however, said that the country's armed
forces were fully prepared.
