By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, OCT. 5.Disabled persons face several problems in the
existing environment and transportation. Accessibility should be
carried out and suitable alternatives found.
People should help the disabled to overcome the barriers, said
Ms. Claire Goodridge, a volunteer of the Voluntary Service
Organisation in the UK, while addressing officials of various
departments and the Pondicherry Transport Corporation, on the
occasion of a workshop on `Barrier-free environment and
accessibility audit', organised by the Department of Social
Welfare, here on Thursday.
Earlier inaugurating the workshop, Mr. A. Kasilingam, Social
Welfare Minister, said the Administration had initiated several
steps to relieve the disabled of their hardships. Centrally-
sponsored schemes were also being implemented.
Mrs. M. Sathiavathi, Secretary to the Social Welfare Department,
spoke of implementation of the National Trust Act.
Mrs. Aloka Guha, chairperson of the National Trust, offered
felicitation. Mr. D. Balakrishnan, Director of Social Welfare,
proposed a vote of thanks.
