'Burqa' diktat in Kolkata school
KOLKATA, OCT. 5. Close on the heels of the `burqa' diktat by a
militant outfit in Jammu and Kashmir, students of a Muslim girls
school in Kolkata have been warned of serious consequences if
they failed to veil themselves outdoors.
The warning was conveyed in a letter, written in Urdu, to the
principal of the Central Kolkata's CMO Girls School.
It had sender's name as `Mujahid-e-Islam'. It asked the principal
to ensure that all girls above the age of 15 to wear `burqa' when
stepping outside.
It said the diktat should be complied by October 5 (today)
otherwise, ``you will be responsible for the consequences''.
The president of the governing body of the school, Mr. Aizaz
Afzal, said the letter was received on October 2 and the police
were immediately notified.
Police sources said the matter was being investigated. They did
not rule out the possibility of it being the handiwork of a
prankster.
The warning comes in the wake of a similar threat to women in
Jammu and Kashmir by the little-known militant outfit `Lashkar-e-
Jabbar', in August which has been widely condemned by almost all
prominent Muslim organisations.
