2 Special Force battalions to assist STF
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI, OCT. 3. Two battalions of the Tamil Nadu Special Force
have been sent to assist in the joint operations by the Special
Task Force to nab forest brigand Veerappan, the Chief Minister,
Mr. O. Paneerselvam, said today.
Talking to reporters at the Secretariat here, he said the two
battalions would make up for withdrawal of the Border Security
Force. The State Government had been informed of the withdrawal,
he said. The STF operations would continue, he added.
Mr. Paneerselvam, who earlier called on the Governor, Dr. C.
Rangarajan, at the Raj Bhavan, said it was only a ``courtesy
call.'' He discussed with the Governor ``issues in general.'' The
meeting was sought by him, and not by the Governor.
Giving details of the decisions taken at his first Cabinet
meeting, the Chief Minister said it cleared a drinking water
project for Tirupur, to be implemented through the Tirupur Area
Development Authority, at a cost Rs.681 crores.
The Government had sought funds from financial institutions.
Also, there was an American aid component of Rs. 125 crores.
