Crackers and decibels
Sir,- The Supreme Court's directive restricting the time for
bursting firecrackers during Diwali is most welcome. It should be
possible to restrict the use of firecrackers to the evening as
stipulated by the court through effective publicity in the media.
However, adhering to the second dictum on decibel levels is
doubtful as the public will not be in a position to identify the
crackers that will generate more than 125 decibels.
Since there is a provision in the Environment Protection Rules
prohibiting the manufacture of such high decibel crackers, they
should not be allowed to enter the market and this clause should
be enforced at the industry-level itself.
