'Training to make police receptive to victims'
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI, OCT. 1. As part of the ongoing process of sensitising
police personnel and encouraging better community policing, it
has been proposed to set up 50 more All-Women Police Stations
(AWPS), the Home Secretary, Mr. Naresh Gupta, said today.
Inaugurating the `gender sensitisation programme' for the seventh
batch at the Police Training College (PTC), here, Mr. Gupta said
that at present there were 58 AWPS.
For the first time in the country, a gender sensitisation
programme had been organised for the entire police personnel.
While the women personnel were being trained at the PTC,
policemen were given training in their districts. The course
material had been specially prepared with the guidance of IG
(Head Quarters), Ms. G. Thilagavathi, and assistance by the State
Women Commission. The course focussed on making the personnel
more receptive to victims who sought their assistance, he said.
Mr. S. Ganapathy, DGP (Training), said a comprehensive course had
been chalked out to resensitise 4,200 women police personnel at
the PTC. Each batch comprised 100 personnel and each course was
conducted for five days. The entire training would be completed
in 42 weeks.
Ms. Thilagavathi said the course had been designed to ensure
maximum participation by the police personnel. Apart from
lectures by specialists from various fields, films, streetplays,
counselling techniques, health care and crisis management were
part of the syllabus.
The concept of community policing should be popularised for
better policing. This would also improve the police image, Mr. K.
Radhakrishnan, DIG (Training), said.
Mr. M.C. Sarangan, principal, PTC, said each batch had a session
for the participants to express their opinion.
