5 more AIADMK women file papers for Nellai Mayor

By Syed Muthahar

TIRUNELVELI, OCT. 1. The election for Tirunelveli Mayor took a curious turn with five more women filing nominations on behalf of the AIADMK, on the final day today. Its official candidate, Mrs. Jayarani, filed her papers on Saturday.

The party workers who were present on the Corporation premises were taken by surprise when news spread that the high command had directed a few more party volunteers to file the papers for Mayor.

Soon Mrs. Vasanthi Murugesan, former secretary of the urban district unit, rushed to the Corporation office and filed her papers, followed by the others - Mrs. Nattar Selvi, Mrs. Hemalatha, Mrs. Mayilammal and Mrs. N. Uma Maheswari. Mrs. Vasanthi Murugesan and Mrs. Mayilammal are the wife and the sister of Mr. S. Murugesan, MP and organising secretary.

According to party sources, some doubts were raised at the eleventh-hour about the caste affiliations of the official nominee and the high command directed all those who had applied for ticket to file their papers on the final day. The Mayor is reserved for SC (woman).

Mrs. Jayarathna of Palayamkottai also applied for AIADMK ticket. But it was denied to her. The Dalit Panthers of India (DPI) named Mrs. Amutha Mathialagan its candidate but as she declined the offer, the DPI supporters approached Mrs. Jayarathna.

But as she was waiting at the Corporation office to file her papers, some AIADMK leaders informed her of the party directive. However, Mrs. Jayarathna stuck to her decision of contesting on behalf of the DPI.
