India briefs envoys on stand against terrorism

NEW DELHI, OCT. 1. India today explained its position to diplomats from various countries on fighting global terrorism as part of its ongoing efforts to build an international consensus against the global menace.

The Minister of State for External Affairs, Mr. Omar Abdullah, during his separate meetings with the Ambassadors and High Commissioners from Asian, African, ASEAN, Latin American, Caribbean and SAARC countries said that the present resolve of international countries, which was supported by India, was against growing fundamentalism and terrorism and not against anyone in particular, official sources said.

However, the Pakistan High Commissioner was not invited to the meeting, sources added.

During the meetings, Mr. Abdullah explained that there had been no request from the U.S. to use Indian military bases for its operations against terrorists but clarified that facilities like refuelling and landing to aircraft from friendly countries would be granted as per the past practice.

In a veiled attack on Pakistan, the Minister reiterated that the international community should resolve to end cross-border terrorism by taking stringent measures against countries sponsoring the menace.
