Blood collection camp on Oct.1

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, SEPT. 28. A mega blood collection camp to be held on October 1, the Blood Donation Day, will help to gather the data required to evolve a policy for voluntary donation drives in the city.

About 5000 units are expected to be collected at the camp in which student volunteers from 100 colleges and 32 blood banks will participate.

The camp will make an assessment of the blood requirement, and help to decide on the need for such camps, Mr. Christodas Gandhi, project director, Tamil Nadu AIDS Control Society (TANSACS), told presspersons on Friday.

The mass donation would also help to achieve the State's aim of realising 100 per cent voluntary blood donation. If it proved successful, the camp would convince the blood banks and hospitals on the availability of voluntary donors so they did not force relatives to donate blood.

It would also demonstrate the procedures to be followed while conducting camps. Safety measures would be adopted, and refreshments provided for the donors at the 250-bed camp. The donated blood would be screened as per the latest regulations before they were handed over to the blood banks and hospitals.

Some of the participating blood banks were not designated to organise blood donation camps, but they could do so in association with the authorised centres, Mr.Gandhi said.

Those who have donated blood more than 50 times will be honoured and donor cards issued to volunteers. The camp will be conducted in the Nehru Indoor Stadium between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
