Peaceful polling in State

By Barun Das Gupta

GUWAHATI, SEPT. 20. Polling in the two bye-elections from the Titabor and Dibrugarh constituencies of the Assam Assembly passed off peacefully today with a voter turnout of 60 to 65 per cent, according to official sources.

The Assam Chief Minister, Mr. Tarun Gogoi, is contesting from the Titabor seat.

This shows that the high voltage propaganda carried on by the Congress and the AGP at Titabor and the Congress and the BJP at Dibrugrah did not sway the voters much, and the turnout was usual.

A significant feature at Dibrugarh was that polling was heavier in rural areas than in urban. Polling percentage was quite high in minority dominated areas, which also is a usual feature.
