Fighting corruption
Sir, - Your Editorial, ``Combating Corruption'' (Sept. 18): The
Chief Vigilance Commissioner's guide is indeed a bold step in
fighting corruption. Wide publicity should be given to it and
copies must be made available to the public on demand. It is
shocking to learn that India is one of the most corrupt countries
in the world; more corrupt than Botswana .
The Tehelka episode should be an eye-opener to us. Wherever
Government money is spent or collected there should be tight
scrutiny. The law enforcement and revenue officials who are
entrusted with verification and administration of Government
projects should be closely watched. One of the best ways to
reduce corruption in public life is to make laws simple and
transparent.
