Medha Patkar resorts to indefinite fast
MUMBAI, SEPT. 17. The Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) leader, Ms.
Medha Patkar, has begun an indefinite fast against the alleged
insensitive approach of the Maharashtra Government on the issue
of resettlement of project-affected people and providing them
with basic amenities such as health and education.
Ms. Patkar was joined by six others in her fast. Their demands
include the implementation of the Daud Committee report, which
was formed to study the plight of the affected people. They also
demanded that land rights be granted to the people immediately.
Ms. Patkar along with others shifted the site of `dharna' from
the Azad Maidan to near the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at
Mantralaya in south Mumbai.
The Chief Minister, Mr. Vilasrao Deshmukh, has promised to have a
meeting with the NBA delegation on Wednesday, sources said.
