BMP complex to house counters of KPTCL, BSNL, BWSSB
By Our Staff Reporter
BANGALORE, SEPT. 15. Residents of Jayanagar, Basavangudi,
Vishweshwarapuram and surrounding areas can now pay their power,
water, telephone bills and property taxes at offices situated
under one roof.
The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike's (BMP) state-of-the-art multi-
purpose complex in Jayanagar II Block nearing completion and is
likely to be inaugurated by this month-end.
This complex will not only accommodate the 66 shop-owners of the
old Jayanagar Market Complex but also house various government
departments, including BMP offices. It will provide all
facilities to the public, including reading and recreation.
A well-equipped public library will be set up on the first floor
of the complex. The third floor will have two badminton courts.
Built at a cost of Rs 5 crores, the complex was planned in 1995.
Shop-keepers were moved to the Lalbagh compound in Kanakanapalya
before work started in 1997.
The project, designed by Sundaram Consultants, was executed by
the BMP's Engineering Department.
The three-storeyed complex will be the first of its kind to house
public relations offices of all departments such as Bangalore
Telecom, Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd. (KPTCL),
Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) and a library.
``The idea is to provide all services to the public under one
roof. Once the complex is inaugurated, people in the
neighbourhood can pay their property taxes, power, water and
telephone bills in the same building. All the 66 shops will be
accommodated in the complex,'' Mr. P.R.Ramesh, Congress
Councillor, said.
The BMP is now on the look out for non-governmental Organisations
(NGOs) or residents' welfare associations in the area to take up
the maintenance of the complex, he said.
The complex has a spacious basement that can accommodate over 60
cars. The ground floor has 32 shops and a community hall. The
first floor has another 34 shops and space for offices of
Bangalore Telecom, KPTCL, BWSSB, senior citizens' associations, a
BMP computer training centre, a children's play room and a
library.
The second floor is meant for BMP offices, including that of
Deputy Commissioner (South), Chief Engineer, Education, Revenue,
Horticulture departments, zonal level offices and a conference
room. ``With this, the Jayanagar Range office will be the first
one to have a corporate look,'' Mr. Ramesh added.
