Training by U.S. sportspersons mooted

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, SEPT. 9. The Pondicherry Chief Secretary, Mr. T. T. Joseph, today suggested that the university requisition sportspersons from the US to train students here.

Delivering a valedictory address at the three-day workshop on South Indian American Studies Network, Mr. Joseph said sport was a major integrating factor and sportspersons in the US proved their mettle in various fields. Hence the university (co-sponsor of the workshop) could draw up a plan for sportspersons to prepare the students.

He said Pondicherry was emerging as a capital of computer hardware industry, and the Planning Commission had also rated the Union Territory number one in human resources development, particularly in health care.

Dr. V. T. Patil, Vice-Chancellor, said conducting workshops on challenges and opportunities in the new millennium would help refocus studies in the US in the third millennium.

He referred to the choice-based credit system (Cafateria) of choosing subjects and courses by students here for inter- disciplinary and multi-disciplinary development.

Mr. Madison Conoley, Vice-Consul of the US Consulate in the Public Affairs Division, said the workshop was very productive and very useful. He assured that the US Consulate would be a partner in the efforts by the South Indian American Studies network.

Mr Bernard D`Samy, president of the network, welcomed those present.

Dr G. Gopakumar, secretary of the network, Dr. N. K. Jha, Head of Department of Politics in the Pondicherry University, and Dr. Balasundaram, Head of Department of History, spoke.
