Situation in U.P. grim

GORAKHPUR, SEPT. 9. The Army and the Air Force are conducting rescue operations in Gorakhpur district of eastern Uttar Pradesh where the situation remains alarming with Rapti and Rohin flowing above the danger mark.

The Additional District Magistrate (Administration), Mr. P.K. Srivastava, said seven embankments on the Rapti had breached and water had entered several low-lying areas.

Food packets have been air dropped in Campiarganj, Pipiganj, Rakhat and Malawn. Mr. Srivastava said areas such as Lahashadi, Azavania and Jharwa in southern side of the city were threatened by the Rapti, forcing people to flee.

Meanwhile, the North-Eastern Railway today decided to run two special trains to Nautanava to carry the stranded people and tourists to Nepal as the Sonauli-Gorakhpur road had submerged. Train movement on the Gorakhpur-Gonda section remained suspended due to floods over a bridge on the Rapti. The road link between Lucknow and Varanasi could not be opened as seepage had developed in embankments at many places.
