Varsity syndicate approves appointment of two senior posts

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, SEPT. 6. The Syndicate of the Madras University today approved the appointment of two senior posts in the University.

While Dr. S. Karunanidhi, Professor of Psychology, was appointed Controller of Examinations, Prof.A. Swaminathan, Principal, Muthurangam Government Arts College, Vellore was named Professor- cum-Director, Institute of Correspondence Education (ICE). Already, Dr. Karunanidhi has been functioning as Controller (in- charge) since his predecessor laid down office over three months back.

As for the ICE, Dr. M. Shanmugam retired as its Director on June 30 and since then a senior Geography professor was appointed director in charge. Two committees that included the Vice Chancellor, Dr. Pon Kothandaraman and the Higher Education Secretary, Mr. Mohan Varghese Chunkath, had two days ago interviewed the candidates for the two posts. The recommendations of the selection committees were today formally approved by the Syndicate.

In another decision, the Syndicate decided to form a selection committee that would screen the applicants for the post of Registrar. The last date for receipt of applications is September 14. Today's Syndicate meeting resolved that the applications would be scrutinised and suitable candidates interviewed before the next Syndicate meeting.

For several months now, the University has been functioning without a full-time Registrar. A selection committee had interviewed over 20 candidates for the post last month, but the committee said it could not find the suitable candidate and hence another advertisement has been released calling for fresh applications.

Recently, the University Grants Commission (UGC) had revised the guidelines regarding the governing councils of affiliated and autonomous colleges. This was approved today by the Syndicate. However, it has to be ratified by the Academic Council of the University, which would meet on September 22.
