Kamal Nath predicts BJP route
By Our Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI, SEPT. 5. The AICC(I) general secretary in charge of
Delhi, Mr. Kamal Nath, today announced that the relatives of the
sitting MCD Councillors would not be given party nominations and
predicted that the BJP would be defeated convincingly in the
Corporation polls.
Addressing a press conference, Mr. Nath said today's meeting of
the MLAs at the Parliament Annexe was the first step towards
preparing the party to face the elections. It was decided to
oppose the system of rotation of seats in the MCD on which the
Chief Minister, Ms. Sheila Dikshit, had already written to the
Union Home Minister, Mr. L.K. Advani. Also present at the press
conference were the DPCC(I) president, Mr.Subhash Chopra,
Mr.Arvinder Singh Lovely and Mr.Bhisham Sharma, MLAs.
Giving details about the outcome, Mr. Nath said that it was
unanimously decided to put up new faces for the MCD polls and the
MLAs should be taken into confidence on the allocation of
tickets. ``It has been decided that no relatives of Councillors
would be given nomination and all those who had worked against
the party in the past or contested as rebels would also not be
given ticket,'' he added.
Predicting a total rout for the BJP, Mr. Nath said it would
initiate the countrywide rejection of the BJP and have national
implications. He said it had been decided in consultation with
the Chief Minister that all Ministers would be assigned blocks in
different areas. They would conduct regular meetings at the block
and district level. Mr. Nath acknowledged that there have been
complaints about the functioning of the Ministers and indicated
that he might seek a separate meeting to sort out the issue.
Praising the younger lot especially, Mr. Arvinder Singh Lovely,
Mr. Bhisham Sharma and Mr. Mahabal Mishra for coming out with
valuable suggestions on the MCD polls, Mr. Nath said he would
soon be conducting meetings of the block and district presidents
and MLAs at the district level. After putting the party structure
in place, public meetings would also be organised to mobilise
people and party workers.
At the same time, he urged the party to concentrate on revision
of electoral rolls which was important. He was happy that the
party MLAs were united in their resolve to defeat the BJP and
said the party had to work hard to ensure that it came out with
flying colours.
