Medical colleges may get more grants

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, SEPT. 5. The Union Health Ministry has offered to provide grants to the State Governments to strengthen the diagnostic facilities in the medical colleges run by them. The grants are to be provided upto Rs. 1.5 crores a State per year.

Under the new scheme, assistance would be provided for strengthening the diagnostic facilities may it be in pathology, microbiology, biochemistry or the radiology departments. The equipment that could be purchased include CT scan, ultrasound machines, MRI, microscopes, and autoclave. To ensure that the equipment functioned properly, an additional grant of upto Rs. 5 lakhs may also be given for the provision of electrical connections.

The State Governments have been authorised to identify the medical colleges that require immediate strengthening of their facilities and submit the cost estimates to the Union Health Ministry on behalf of the colleges. The Ministry has set up a high-power committee to scrutinise the proposals and make the necessary allocations.

The scheme has been launched even while the World Bank and other such agencies are providing funds for improving the amenities in medical institutions at the primary and secondary level.
