'2.48 lakh pending cases cleared during Jain tenure'

CHENNAI, AUG. 30. Mr. Justice Nagendra Kumar Jain transferred to
the Karnataka High Court as its Chief Justice was given a warm
farewell today and Mr. Justice Kaladiparambil Narayana Kurup
assumed charge as the acting Chief Justice of the Madras High
Court.
The Advocate-General of Tamil Nadu, Mr. N. R. Chandran, said a
record 2.48 lakh pending cases were disposed of during Mr. Jain's
tenure.
He also cited the direct recruitment of judicial officers through
the TNPSC, opening of a Tamil Nadu Judicial Academy and execution
of over 20,000 pending non-bailable warrants as major
achievements during the period.
Noting that learning was a continuous process, Mr. Jain said he
admired the south Indian culture which gave a scope to learn and
improve. He would assume charge in the Karnataka High Court
tomorrow.
All judges of the court, the Additional Advocate- General, State
Public Prosecutor and heads of advocates' associations
participated.
Later, on receipt of a notification from the Union Ministry of
Law, Justice and Company Affairs appointing Mr. Kurup as the
acting Chief Justice to ``perform the duties of the office of the
Chief Justice'', he assumed office in the afternoon.
Born in 1939, he enrolled himself in the Kerala High Court in
1964. He was sworn in additional judge of the court in 1992 and
made permanent judge on January 1, 1994. He was transferred to
the Madras High Court on November 1, 2000.
Among his notable judgments are the one banning smoking of
tobacco in any form in public places, ban on display of carcass
of slaughtered animals and an order stressing fundamental rights
for circus animals.
