'A patriot of outstanding commitment'
By Mahesh Vijapurkar
MUMBAI, AUG. 30. The Maharashtra Governor, Dr. P. C. Alexander,
today described Mr. G. K. Moopanar as a ``patriot of outstanding
commitment to the nation's cause''. In a condolence message, he
said Mr. Moopanar had ``served the country with great sacrifices
to his own comforts. I admired him''. The condolence message was
sent to Mr. Govindavasam, Mr. Moopanar's son, in Chennai today.
Our Bhubaneswar Special Correspondent reports:
The Orissa Governor, Mr. M.M. Rajendran, said the passing away of
Mr. Moopanar , known for his high integrity in public life and
value-based politics, was a great loss to public life in Tamil
Nadu and the country.
Our Chennai Special Correspondent reports:
The former Prime Minister, Mr. H.D. Deve Gowda, noted that
despite being ``born with a silver spoon'' Mr. Moopanar had a
soft corner for the have-nots and worked for the betterment of
these sections. In his death, the country had lost a leader of
concern and commitment.
Recalling the ``many occasions'' of meeting with Mr. Moopanar,
the West Bengal Governor, Mr. Viren J. Shah, said he found the
late leader as a person of great simplicity, clear ideology and
dedication to the service of the down-trodden. This was a loss
not only to the people of Tamil Nadu, but for India, as men of
such character were becoming rare.
Our Thiruvananthapuram Special Correspondent reports:
The Kerala Chief Minister, Mr. A.K. Antony, said Mr. Moopanar, a
respected leader, upheld the high ideals of the Indian National
Congress. He was a shining presence in the national and Tamil
Nadu politics and contributed much to resolution of various
crises in national politics and the Congress.
PTI reports from New Delhi:
The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day today as a mark of
respect to Mr. Moopanar.
