BJP and its mascot

Sir,- The Prime Minister has launched the election campaign in Uttar Pradesh for the BJP by announcing a solution to the Ayodhya tangle by March. This is a mischievous, misleading statement. No politician wants a settlement of this contentious issue because his primary concern is with garnering votes in the name of Ayodhya. The BJP is on a weak wicket in Uttar Pradesh and is not sure if it will return to power. So it has to use its mascot in the form of the ever- willing swayamsevak, Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee, to flag off the canard of a settlement of the Ayodhya issue. What happened in the last eight years when nobody was interested in settling this issue except to make noises. Govindacharya was right in saying that Mr. Vajpayee was the mukota.

The Prime Minister's concern should not be restricted to winning the elections for the BJP. His other serious concerns should include fighting poverty, hunger, illiteracy and human rights violations on the Dalits, minorities and the oppressed sections of our society. In all these areas he and his Government have failed miserably. Hear the crying voice of the voiceless, honourable Prime Minister and be their saviour.

Dolphy D'Souza,

Mumbai
