Breakthrough in espionage case

By Our Staff Reporter

VISAKHAPATNAM, AUG. 29. The post box numbers at Delhi and Khatmandu and the courier services, through which naval officers passed on information to Pakistani agents have been located.

Police teams were being sent to places such as Delhi, Mumbai and Kathmandu for further investigation, Mr. A.K. Khan, Commissioner of Police, said here on Wednesday. Police had also obtained clear details of the trips the three Navy personnel (now under judicial remand here) had made and the money they received from the Pakistani agents.

``We have collected the essential information and evidence in this case and in the second phase of the investigation are tying up the information available and other things required. We might even stumble on more pieces of evidence and persons involved in the espionage,'' Mr. Khan said.

Bijender Singh Panwar, a former Chief Petty Officer of Indian Navy now running a security agency in Delhi, Rajbir Singh Kaundle, a Deputy Chief Petty Officer of INS Circars here, and Lt. Commander Raj Kumar, Chief Security Officer of the Naval Armament Depot, here were arrested under the Official Secrets Act for passing on information to Pakistani agents for the last six years.
