Key figure in spy case held

VISAKHAPATNAM, AUG. 23. Birender Singh Pagwar, a key figure in the Navy espionage affair, has been arrested by the Visakhapatnam Police and is being brought here from Delhi on a transit warrant, Mr. A.K. Khan, Commissioner of Police, said here today.

A former Chief Petty Officer (CPO), Birender, who was convicted earlier in an espionage case and is now running a security agency in New Delhi, is said to have introduced Rajbir Singh Kaundle, a Deputy CPO of INS Circars here, to contacts in Nepal. Rajbir was arrested here on August 11 and is now in police custody.

On Thursday, Mr.P. Purushottama Rao, Seventh Metropolitan Magistrate, extended the police remand of Rajbir to August 27 and directed the police to produce him in the court on August 28.

According to Mr. Khan, hard evidence had been obtained on many aspects involving Lt. Cdr. Rajkumar, Security Officer of the Naval Armament Depot here, who was also being questioned.
