IT MUST be an ideal world where children can point out to the big
guys on 10 steps to be taken to improve the lives of kids. School
students in Chennai will soon get a chance to do just that.
On August 24, about 80 children from the City will participate in
an inter-school extempore competition - ``Say Yes for Children''
- conducted jointly by the UNICEF, The Hindu-Young World and the
Fourth R at Chettinad Vidyashram, R.A.Puram.
The contest is part of the Global Movement for Children (GMC)
programme, which is not just looking to make the world a better
place for kids. It's trying to get the children themselves to
bring about that change.
The GMC already has some big names backing it, including Nelson
Mandela and Graca Machel who are heading the leadership
initiative.
The competition will be held in two groups: Junior - classes six
to eight, and Senior - classes nine to 12.
The results of the worldwide campaign will be presented in
September at the special session on children at New York.
