'Canal walk project will be implemented'
By Our Staff Reporter
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, AUG. 18. The Government will implement the
canal walk project without causing any inconvenience to the
public, the KPCC president, Mr. K. Muraleedharan, MP, has said.
Inaugurating a dharna of UDF councillors in front of the
corporation office today against the alleged corruption and
extravagance of the council, Mr. Muraleedharan said that unlike
the LDF Government which unilaterally decided schemes, the UDF
Government would take into account the views of the public and
people's representatives before implementing developmental
projects.
Mr. Muraleedharan accused the corporation of reducing the city
into a refuse heap. The corporation should have considered the
problems and sentiments of the people of Vilappilsala before
planning the garbage treatment plant. The Mayor would have to
reconsider the decision stalling the development works in the
wards represented by UDF councillors, he said.
Mr. V.S. Sivakumar, MP, accused the Mayor of unilaterally
implementing development schemes. The Leader of the Opposition in
the council, Mr. K. Maheswaran Nair, Mr. K. Mohan Kumar and Mr.
N. Sakthan Nadar, both MLAs, the DCC vice-president, Mr.
Peethambara Kurup, and the councillor, Mr. Thampanoor Satish,
were among those who addressed the dharna.
Repeal canal walk: LDF
By Our Staff Reporter
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, AUG. 18. The former Speaker, Mr. M.
Vijayakumar, has demanded that the Government repeal the
notification on the canal walk project.
Inaugurating a dharna organised by the LDF councillors in the
corporation in front of the Secretariat today, Mr. Vijayakumar
accused the UDF Government of infringing on the powers of the
corporation.
The powers for freezing transactions of land for construction are
vested with the Chief Town Planner and the development authority.
By intervening in the process, the Government infringed on the
powers of the city corporation too.
The Union Rural Development Minister, Mr. Venkaiah Naidu, had
lauded the LDF Government in the presence of the Chief Minister,
Mr. A.K. Antony, for efficiently implementation the People's Plan
Campaign schemes, he said.
The CPI district secretary, Mr. N. Aravindan, the CPI(M) district
secretary, Mr. M. Satyanesan, the former Mayor, Mr. V.
Sivankutty, and the RSP leader, Mr. Ambalathara Sreedharan Nair,
were among those who addressed the dharna. The councillors took
out a demonstration from the Martyrs' Column before the dharna.
