Integrated transport system for TRIDA area mooted
By Our Staff Reporter
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, AUG. 18. A 54-km-long integrated mass
transport system has been mooted to connect the Central Business
District (CBD) of the State capital with Ulloor, Peroorkada,
Karamana and with further extensions to Neyyattinkara,
Kazhakuttom and Vizhinjam.
This has been proposed in the draft proposals presented to the
State Government by the Consulting Engineering Services Ltd.
which had been entrusted with the Comprehensive Traffic and
Transportation Study for the Thiruvananthapuram urban area.
The proposed road network will comprise radial and ring roads
along with five corridors. The development of the integrated mass
transport system has been proposed in stages to minimise traffic
disturbance during construction and to match with the probable
funding arrangements.
The draft proposals, presented before the State-level steering
committee constituted for the study, cover short, medium and
long-term measures. The short-term recommendations include
junction improvement, pedestrian facilities, augmentation of road
capacity and traffic management and enforcement measures.
For the congested East Fort and Thampanoor area of the CBD,
improvement measures have been suggested in the form of short,
medium and long-term plans to be implemented in different phases.
An exclusive pedestrian corridor along Chalai market for
movement between Thampanoor bus terminal and East Fort connecting
the Central Railway station and Chalai has been mooted.
Construction of a fly-over and reorganisation of the existing bus
terminal at East Fort are included in the medium range proposals.
In order to provide complete connectivity at the district-level,
a major road network system comprising five radial roads and
development of two ring roads has been proposed. This will enable
better connectivity between the city, the surrounding panchayats
and the municipal towns of Neyyattinkara, Nedumangad,
Attingal and Varkala and also development of the region.
The final study report, which is to be presented to the
Government by the end of the year, will prioritise the identified
corridors for detailed engineering works and implementation.
The Principal Secretary, Transport, the Officer on Special Duty,
Ministry of Urban Department, chairpersons of Attingal,
Nedumangad and Neyyattinkara municipalities, the State transport
Commissioner, the District Collector, the Chief Town Planner, the
TRIDA Secretary, the Executive Director of CES, Mr. B.C. Roy, and
the senior consultant, Mr. Thomas Paulose, attended the meeting.
