Motorcycle patrols to curb crime
By Our Staff Reporter
BANGALORE, AUG. 18 The Director-General and Inspector-General of
Police, Mr. V. V. Bhaskar, on Saturday announced a series of
measures including the constitution of criminal intelligence
gathering units, police assistance booths and motorcycle
patrolling to restore the confidence of the people in the police.
He told presspersons at the Corps of Detectives (CoD)
headquarters here that the State Government had approved a
proposal to purchase 1,000 motorcycles for policemen in
Bangalore. The motorcycles would be fitted with a siren and would
be used for patrolling - mainly at night. The first 100
motorcycles would be on the road in a fortnight.
The motorcycle patrolling would help restore the confidence of
the people in the police and would help the local police in
discharging their duties more efficiently. Besides, stress would
be laid on community policing. Police assistance booths would be
set up in several areas. The system of community policing would
first be introduced in Bangalore and later extended to other
districts.
Since 90 per cent of the crimes were committed between 11 p.m.
and 5 a.m., the motorcycle patrols would be active during that
period. Policemen from the City Armed Reserve would be drafted
for the motorcycle patrols.
The Chief Minister, Mr. S. M. Krishna, had assured him that all
the resources would be placed at the disposal of the department
for efficient policing.
