Second phase of polls peaceful

HYDERABAD, AUG. 17. The second phase of gram panchayat elections in the State passed off peacefully on Friday barring a few incidents.

In Chennanarayanipalem village of Nellore district, police opened fire in the air to disperse warring TDP and Congress workers. No one was injured in the firing. In view of allegations of rigging, repoll has been ordered in all the 12 wards and for the post of sarpanch.

The police opened four rounds of fire in the air at Sarvaipalem village of Prakasam district to quell clashing groups. In booth No.86 at Obulareddypally, where some miscreants poured ink into the ballot box, a repoll has been ordered.

Over 70 per cent voters exercised their franchise today in 67,630 polling stations. In all, 7,230 gram panchayats went to the polling involving 27 revenue divisions of the State. In all, 1,770 mobile police parties were formed apart from 464 striking forces and 193 special striking forces.

The DGP, Mr. H. J. Dora, expressed gratitude to people for extending cooperation in the conduct of the second phase of panchayat polls successfully, according to a press release.
