Second phase of polls peaceful
By Our Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD, AUG. 17. The second phase of gram panchayat elections
in the State passed off peacefully on Friday barring a few
incidents.
In Chennanarayanipalem village of Nellore district, police opened
fire in the air to disperse warring TDP and Congress workers. No
one was injured in the firing. In view of allegations of rigging,
repoll has been ordered in all the 12 wards and for the post of
sarpanch.
The police opened four rounds of fire in the air at Sarvaipalem
village of Prakasam district to quell clashing groups. In booth
No.86 at Obulareddypally, where some miscreants poured ink into
the ballot box, a repoll has been ordered.
Over 70 per cent voters exercised their franchise today in 67,630
polling stations. In all, 7,230 gram panchayats went to the
polling involving 27 revenue divisions of the State. In all,
1,770 mobile police parties were formed apart from 464 striking
forces and 193 special striking forces.
The DGP, Mr. H. J. Dora, expressed gratitude to people for
extending cooperation in the conduct of the second phase of
panchayat polls successfully, according to a press release.
