Aparna Sen film to be screened in Fukuoka fete
By Gautaman Bhaskaran
TOKYO, AUG. 17. The coming Fukuoka International Film Festival
will feature an Indian movie in its main Asian Panorama section.
Ms. Aparna Sen's `Paromitar Ek Din' (House of Memories) in
Bengali is the director's latest work, which explores in 132
minutes, the life of a middle class woman trapped in a loveless
marriage with a handicapped child.
Interestingly, the film explores not quite the relationship
between the woman and her husband as it does between her and her
mother-in-law, played superbly by Ms. Sen herself.
The 11-day Festival takes pride in introducing to Japan and the
world Asia's cinematic excellence, and `Paromitar Ek Din,' as the
Festival Director, Mr. Tadao Sato, feels, ably qualifies here.
The Festival has yet another aim or two: to discover talent and
promote cultural Asia.
It is a comparatively small Festival of just 32 films, divided
into four sections (Asian Panorama, Iranian Collection, Chinese
Language Basket and Focus on a Philippine Director)., it provides
ample opportunity and scope for debates and discussions among the
movie fraternity, something which most similar events elsewhere
do not.
Some of the Festival's highlights this year are Turkey's `Clouds
of May', Malaysia's `Lieutenant Adnan', Thailand's `Behind the
Painting', Vietnam's `The Golden Key' and Japan's `Hole in the
Sky'. Some of Iran's renowned auteurs, such as Mr. Majid Majidi
and Mr. Ebrahim Forouzesh, will be at Fukuoka with their
celluloid creations.
