Early sainthood for Mother Teresa likely
KOLKATA, AUG. 15. The Vatican is likely to speed up the
beatification and subsequent cannonisation (sainthood) process
for Mother Teresa, the Archbishop of Kolkata, Henry Sebastian
D'Souza, said today.
``I heard today that there are indications in the Vatican
newspapers that the process for beatification and cannonisation
process will be fast,'' the Archbishop told newsmen here after
concluding the diocesan enquiry into the Mother's life, virtues
and reputation of sanctity for the cause of her beatification.
The cannon law of the Roman Catholic Church stipulates a waiting
period of five years after a person's death before the entire
sainthood process could begin. In the Mother's case, however, the
Pope waived this provision and ordered the process within two
years after she died on September 5, 1997. The diocesan enquiry
began on July 26, 1999.
To a question, the Archbishop said, that the Pope, however, ``may
not like to waive the requirement of another miracle'' when
postulations are made to the Vatican for her cannonisation. - PTI
