Sanaa loses in quarterfinals

NEW DELHI, AUG. 13. Sanaa Bhambri wound up her European campaign having reached the singles quarterfinals and the doubles semifinals of the Hasselt Cup under-14 tournament in Belgium last week.

Sanaa could not win a game against the fourth-seeded Olga Savchuk of Ukraine in the quarterfinals, but she dropped a mere 12 games in winning her first three rounds.

The three Indian players were part of the ITF Asian team on the European circuit, and played five tournaments over the last five weeks in France, Holland, Germany and Belgium after a brief preparatory camp in Paris. The programme from July 5 to August 12 was part of the ITF project, sponsored by the Grand Slam Development Fund.

The results:

Girls singles: Sanaa Bhambri bt Liza-Mari Cloete 6- 2, 6-3; bt Eva Maria Petri 6-0, 6-0; bt Stefania Pesce 6-3, 6-4; lost to Olga Savchuk 0-6, 0-6.

Kartiki Bhat bt Bruna Paes 6-0, 6-3; bt Tatiana Cutrona 6-1, 6- 4; lost to Ekatarina Makarova 6-3, 1-6, 6-7 (6/8).

Girls doubles: Kartiki Bhat/Sanaa Bhambri bt Tatiana Cutrona/Barbara Laurent 7-6, 3-6, 6-2; bt Estephania Cracium/Laura Vallverdu 6-2, 6-2; lost to Ekatarina Makarova/Ekatarina Kosminskaya 3-6, 4-6.

Boys singles: Anshuman Dutta lost to Vladimir Bondarenko 2-6, 6- 7; doubles: Anshuman Dutta/Ali El Sherbiny bt Jian-Lin Lu/Gao Wan 6-2, 7-5; lost to Tristan Farron-Nahon/Christopher Chirico 4-6, 3-6.
