Sale of monthly cards for toned milk suspended

By S. Vydhianathan

CHENNAI, AUG. 13. To popularise high fat milk among consumers, Aavin has suspended monthly card sales for toned milk for the current month in select booths in the city. Instead, monthly cards are issued only for standard milk (SM) and full cream milk (FCM) through these booths.

At present Aavin is supplying toned milk (3 per cent fat), SM (4.5 p.c fat) and FCM (6 p.c fat) through its booths in the city. Out of 7.7 lakh litres being sold daily, about 5.5 lakh litres are toned milk, with standard milk (SM) and full cream milk (FCM) constituting the rest.

As the per litre loss in the sale of toned milk is more than that of SM and FCM, Aavin wants to improve the sale of latter varieties to reduce its overall loss.

The loss in the sale of toned milk is Rs. 1.5 per litre while it is less than a rupee in the case of standard and high cream milk, according to sources in the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers' Federation.

Aavin has selected 13 select booths for this purpose, which are close to automatic vending machines (AVM). For the current month these AVMs, now supplying SM, will supply toned milk.

Sources said the monthly card sales completed last week showed 75 per cent of consumers purchased cards for SM supply and the rest insisted on toned milk supply. Aavin would continue to provide toned milk through cards for these consumers from next month as they did not want to lose them.

Authorities hope that sale of Aavin's high fat milk would pick up in course of time as its price is less than that of low fat content milk from private diaries. While Aavin sells FM at Rs.13 per litre, private dairies sell at Rs.15 a litre respectively.

At present about 75,000 litres of SM are being sold in the city, and 10,000 litres of FCM. This is apart from 1.3 lakh litres through AVMs.
