Karan, Rishi shine in Syria

NEW DELHI, AUG. 11. Karan Rastogi and Rishi Behl made it to the singles quarterfinals, in a draw of 64, in the ITF junior tournament in Damascus, Syria.

The second-seeded Karan Rastogi beat Mwafak Al Hafez of Syria 6- 1, 6-0 after a bye in the first round. He went on to down the 12th-seeded Mohamad Al Kawary of Qatar 6-4, 6-0 in the pre- quarterfinals. The 14-year-old will meet the seventh-seeded Sherif El Sherfi of Egypt in the quarterfinals.

The 11th-seeded Rishi Behl beat Balaza Bulovszki of Hungary 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) in the first round; Hayan Marouf of Syria 6-2, 7-5 in the second round and Mohammad Ali Nabhany of Oman 6- 4, 6-3 in the pre-quarterfinals.

In the quarterfinal, Rishi will meet Mosaed Al Jazzaf of Kuwait.

Amit Karunakaran beat Mohammed Bawadkji of Syria 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, before losing 6-1, 3-6, 2-6 to Mosaed Al Jazzaf.

Navdeed Singh lost to Ali Al Ghareeb of Kuwait 1-6, 1- 6 and Rewant Dutta lost to the 14th-seeded Yulian Suitolin of Ukraine 1-6, 2-6 in the first round.

In doubles, Karan Rastogi and Rishi Behl have been drawn to meet Ahmed Shebl and Mohamed El Souhafy of Egypt in the second round after a bye.

Rewant Datta and Nishendran Sivendran of Sri Lanka beat the Indo-Pakistani combination of Navdeep Singh and Mahir Nisar 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1, to set up a pre-quarterfinal clash with Mohamad Abdullah and Abdurahman Al Hamady of Qatar.

Amit Karunakaran in the company of Yassir Bovyahya of Morocco lost to Ali Al Ghareeb and Abdullah Al Mukaimy of Kuwait 2-6, 3- 6.

In the girls' section, Krushmi Chhedda beat Hadil Al Khateeb of Syria 6-0, 6-1, but lost 1-6, 3-6 to the top-seeded Noha Mouhsen of Egypt in the pre-quarterfinals.
