NDA calls for special session of Assembly

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, AUG. 11. A joint meeting of leaders and legislators of the NDA parties, held here on Friday under the chairmanship of the DMK legislature party leader, Mr. R.V. Janakiraman, called upon the Congress-led coalition to convene a special session of the Territorial Assembly to discuss the issues arising out of composition of a uniform sales tax in Pondicherry.

A resolution blamed `infighting' in the Congress for the enforcement.

The Chief Minister, Mr. P. Shanmugham, had in the recent past brought nearly 105 commodities under the vexatious UST here.

Now another 84 commodities were likely to be brought under the new taxation proposals.

In the circumstances, it was amusing to hear the Chief Minister saying he would plan the taxation measures without harming consumers.

To enlist a joint and unanimous protest against the UST a special session of the Assembly should be convened, the meeting felt.

Other demands of the NDA were: holding of civic polls without delay, release of the recommendations of the special industrial tribunals to enable workers of the AFT mill and the SPINCO to get enhanced wages, implementation of the recommendations of the State BC Commission, payment of Rs. 1000 for a tonne of cane supplied by farmers and payment of an incentive of Rs. 30 for a tonne of paddy to farmers.

Leaders of the PMC, the BJP, the Dalit Panthers of India, the New Justice Party, the Janata Dal (United), MGR-ADMK, and the Makkal Tamizh Desam participated.
